moderate improvements

Made a few improvements to the program:

1) Changed how shards are initially placed, so that the generation should be moderately faster.

2) Fixed (hopefully!) an issue where do to multi-threading the program would get out of sync, causing it to stop making further progress and just churn endlessly.
